Apartment Building Lyoner Strasse - Frankfurt am Main - Germany
The “office city” Niederrad was developed on 144 acres in the early 1960s as a mono-functional business district.
Today, more than a third of the buildings are empty.
In 2008, bb22 conducted a study examining the costs needed to transform at least the core zone of the district into a mixed business and residential district.
The study found that through the redevelopment and redensification of existing office buildings, three thousand apartments could be created for some six thousand inhabitants.
A reference framework is currently being developed based on this.
In the first pilot project, a fourteen-story highrise at Lyoner Strasse 19 was converted into an apartment building and boarding house with ninety-eight renovated apartments and an additional three floors.
The existing building was stripped back to its bare structure and given an entirely new façade. The additional floors are not visually discernable.
